Windows Small Business Server 2011 Review

Windows 8 clamor, it's easy to miss other very good products Microsoft is developing, including Windows Small enterprise Server 2011 Essentials ($545 for 25 users), an extremely user-friendly OS shell that sits over the powerful Server 2008 R2 system. The price is usually a bargain for small establishments as a result of capabilities like simple-to-create remote access, upcoming integration with Office 365, along with a number of add-ins to extend functionality. New enhancements in SBS 2011 over legacy versions allow it to be the best small business server os in existence.

Setup and Configuration

I tested SBS 2011 pre-attached to HP's ProLiant MicroServer, small business server hardware that is the good fit for Business Server 2011 Essentials. HP and Microsoft have created an even initial setup, perfect for outfits with minimal IT staff. The pre-computer install interface in BIOS  allows users to configure credentials like administrator name and password, server name, DNS, standard user, and the company name.

Even more technical users would possibly not much like the fusion of HP's software and Microsoft's. For the server I tested, there was clearly not a way to circumvent HP's component of the program without formatting and installing SBS 2011 from scratch. However, I stumbled upon HP's pre-OS install configuration wizard a helpful addition in enabling SBS all set immediately.

Through the install, the server rebooted itself once or twice without requiring any intervention from me. This automation  was in stark contrast for the 2008 R2's install process, which regularly requires an eagle-eye focus and a reaction to several prompts. At the end of SBS 2011's installation, the material "your server has become ready for use'" popped up. It took approximately 20 minutes from beginning to end with virtually no hassle. That’s impressive.

Once installed, the software instructs you the way to plug each computer in a very network towards server and also automatically recognizes and configures the server depending on the user-specified credentials created about the pre-install screen. The OS truly lives nearly its marketing hypes united that's feasible for a company to configure.

Used to do notice, after setup, at the base right on the desktop text that reads, "Windows Server 2008 R2." Used to do a double-take, wondering if somehow I installed an unacceptable OS. A "winver" command confirmed that, no, Used to do indeed install SBS 2011. When asked, Microsoft stated that the 2008 R2 imprint appears because 2008 R2 runs underneath the newer system. I think that  message ought to be dropped because doing so could lead to confusion, specifically for a server being focused on smaller businesses that could be technically lacking.

A feature that truly differentiates SBS 2011 from Server 2008 will be the dashboard.  In Server 2008, after install, the Server Manager is exactly what you typically see after installing the OS. Navigating Server Manager  requires some experience setting up Windows servers. In place of Server Manager, SBS 2011 has a dashboard, an individual-friendly, wizard-based centralized console for configuring all the main tasks you'll would like to perform that has a server, for instance configuring the server and adding server roles. Sharing options also configured from your dashboard. Administrators can setup users, shared folders and in addition set password policies here. Clicking the dashboard launches "starting out tasks," which introduces the characteristics in SBS 2011.

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard CAL (5 Devices)
With SBS 2011 you choose how CALs will be used based on how the server is to be accessed on a regular basis. There are two types of CALs to choose from: Device CALs or User CALs. These options give you the flexibility to choose the CAL type that best suits your business needs. Device CALs With Device CALs, you acquire a CAL for every device-such as laptops, desktop computers, Pocket PCs and smartphones-that needs access to your server. With this option, any user can access the server on the licensed device. Device CALs might make the most economic and administrative sense for an organization that has multiple users for one device, such as shift workers. If you choose device CALs, then each device that accesses the SBS 2011 server will consume a CAL, and you can reallocate that CAL if you retire a device. User CALs With User CALs, you acquire a CAL for individuals who are given named access to your server. Licensed users can access the server from any device. User CALs might make the most sense for an organization that has many roaming employees who need access to the corporate network from mobile devices or employees who use multiple devices to access the network. You can reallocate a user CAL if a reassignment is permanent. You can also temporarily reassign a user CAL if the user is on leave or the device is disabled.
